Hey, Violet Beauregarde — rise and shine!

It’s well established that we here at LunchBlogKC are big fans of QuikTrip. And we get more than a little excited when there’s a new rolling food to be had. So when I spotted the Blueberry Pancake Roller sign on the way to work the other morning, I had to stop and try one.

I may have actually tried this new item three times over the past few weeks — and I’ll warn that it may not be for everybody. It depends on your affinity for bready breakfasts. The Blueberry Pancake Roller is pretty dense, and while it’s tempting to get the “2 for $2.22*” roller food deal, you likely won’t need the second.

Flavor-wise, it’s a nice balance of salty and sweet, meat and bread. I didn’t even run into any of the gristle bits typically found in this kind of sausage link. Gristle bits are the worst.

I couldn’t tell if there was any built-in maple flavor to the pancake part. While it's good by itself, more sweet-toothed patrons might want to add extra syrup. Maybe look around and see if QT has any complimentary syrup tubs at the condiment bar.

Overall, the Blueberry Pancake Roller is a fine addition to the morning lineup — probably my favorite of the rolling breakfast options. And I’m so happy to live in a world where it’s possible to eat blueberry pancakes while driving.

tasting pretty much like regular sour cream. We sure do like the idea, though.

Like you do. Robert Downey Jr. plays Marvin the ex-husband, who is secretly
Tony Stark undercover. (This is never stated outright as such, but come on.
Also, I’d love to see how Iron Man would trick out a food truck.)
Eight chefs take on the savory science.

It’s a tough job judging the Chef’s Classic Knock OUT ‘Bout. You must be prepared to gorge yourself on 16 appetizers, and then still be ready for the incredible responsibility of deciding the ultimate victor in the chef vs. chef head-to-head final battle.

Or so we thought. It actually turns out we’re not required to eat any of the appetizers in the first two rounds, since it’s the audience vote that counts in determining who advances. But what were we going to do? Not eat some small bites from eight of Kansas City’s finest chefs?

That’s not how we roll at Lunch Blog. Here’s a rundown of everything we tasted on the road to the main event.
One shot. And six pounds of brisket.

Ever since Shaw and I got shut out at the Kansas City Ad Club’s first CHILLYs, that cold winter’s eve has haunted us.

We made a damn fine pot of chili that night. I won’t go into my sour grapes here — but I will say that by the time the cook-off was over, we’d been completely cleaned out of chili. People liked it, but the deep pockets spending dollars on extra votes weren’t coming our way.

So for the second annual CHILLYs, we came at it hardcore.
The heat is on for the DLT threequel.

As much as we love Taco Bell, it pains us to admit we were rather ambivalent to hear about the new Fiery Doritos Locos Taco ($1.39).

For one thing, we’ve never had the Flamas Doritos we’re told the shell of this taco is based on. Neither one of your Lunch Bloggers have bought Doritos with any regularity since college, and back then there were only two kinds -- regular Nacho Cheese and the girl flavor, Cool Ranch.

Plus, we’re skeptical about any fast food menu items that claim to be spicy, because they never are. We haven’t even mentioned yet this is the third Doritos Locos Taco the 'Bell has come up with, and threequels always blow.

As previously mentioned, Robert and I were invited to be judges at the second annual Chef’s Classic Knock OUT ‘Bout. Unfortunately, Robert had to bow out for a family thing, so I was left to represent Lunch Blog by myself. No worries, though. I showed up to the fight with my appetite, notebook and most severe judgy face -- excited to taste what the contenders brought this year.
Ready for a food fight?

The second Chef’s Classic Knock OUT ‘Bout is happening this weekend, and your Lunch Bloggers are excited to be judging the competition.

In the first two rounds of battle, local chefs will make appetizers and VIP ticketholders will cast votes for their favorite. Then the top two contenders will get in the ring for the mystery ingredient final round, judged by us, Kimberly Winter Stern and Missy Roe. The whole thing will be hosted by Stretch from Grinders.

Will Charles d’Albaing of Chaz on the Plaza defend his title? Will Brandon Winn of Room 39 make it to final round again? Or will there be two new competitors vying for the prize?

And most importantly, will there be a tie, forcing the opponents to actually put on up their gloves and box until one of them goes down?*

This is our second time as judges at the KOB, and we’re the only returning judges from the first year. It’s like we’re the Randy Jacksons of Kansas City food blogs.

The Knock OUT ‘Bout benefits St. Paul Catholic School. Tickets start at $25 and include food and drink, but with a VIP ticket you also get to sample and vote in the appetizer rounds. Check back here next week for a recap of all the action.

When: Saturday, April 13, 2013, with doors at 5:30 p.m.
Where: St. Thomas Aquinas High School, 11411 Pflumm Road, Overland Park, KS 66215
The new best part of waking up.

Coffee Ale combines two of my favorite things. First, coffee, which keeps me alert and provides me with the necessary will to live. Second, beer, which makes everything better, until it suddenly makes everything sad.

A collaboration between Boulevard Brewing Company and The Roasterie, the release of Coffee Ale seems to be relatively hype free. I was in and out of Cellar Rat with a few bottles this morning, no problem. As opposed to the Great Chocolate Ale Hunt of last year, which involved showing up at Lukas Liquor at 7 a.m., and even then not being the first person in line.
You don’t have to be a regular to sing here, but it helps.

In search of some cheap eats and karaoke airtime, we did Guys’ Night at Red Balloon last month.

Alas, the karaoke was a bust. In our experience the KJ sang three out of every five numbers and called up the regulars before giving any new blood a shot. Fair enough -- your place, your rules.
Living large on a two-risotto night.

Shaw and I were excited to attend Ophelia’s Restaurant & Inn last week for a sampling of Executive Chef Bobby Stearns’ new menu. Situated near the Jackson County Courthouse, as I drove past all the storefronts of the local shops and restaurants in Independence Square, I thought it might not be so bad to be called for jury duty. Except, of course, for the actual juroring.

Walking into Ophelia’s, I was shown to the bar and ordered a Manhattan. While sipping on my drink, I noticed a few of the other guests were having what I was told was a Yellow Cake Martini. Apparently it’s a house specialty, so maybe I should’ve tried that. But with its stark interior and dark wood, Ophelia’s strikes me as more of a classic cocktail kind of place.
Who’s haus? Bier’s haus.

A couple of months ago, a bunch of co-workers came back from having lunch at Haus and told me they’d just had the best fries ever. That’s right -- ever.

Clearly, I had to try these fries for myself, and while I don’t know if they’re the best, they are excellent. Haus somehow pulls off a crispy exterior with a chewy center, the result of a two-stage frying method involving a brine and possibly dark wizardry.
They’re fried-shut corn tortillas filled with ground beef, then garnished with a ton of cheese and lettuce. ‘Land, no.

How cheap is Hiland Light? It’s so cheap that even I think it’s nasty.

And seriously, at $4.99 for a 20 pack, Hiland Light may be the cheapest beer I’ve ever had. I’m pretty sure the last time I bought Meister Brau it was at least $2.89 for a sixer, and that was in the ‘90s.

I found Hiland Light at the Missouri Lukas Liquor. They had a few small sample glasses out, and it tasted fine enough to bring home for a trial run as the cheap beer of the house -- after all, at 25 cents per can compared to 48 cents for a Natural Light (case of 24 for $11.49), that’s a savings of $4.60. Or in other terms, about three Taco Bell Beefy 5-Layer Burritos.
My bologna has a first name -- it’s F R I E D.

I’ve been a fan of old school country music ever since I was introduced to it in college by Mike Soden, fellow alumni of KU's campus station KJHK 90.7 FM and host of the fondly remembered Jayhawk Hayride.

The band that really did it for me was BR5-49, whose self-titled full-length debut had just come out right around then. At the time they were recording it, BR5-49 was also playing four-hour sets three times a week as the house band at Robert’s Western World. And as that record remains one of my favorites to this day, I wanted to stop at Robert’s to have a beer and check out BR5-49’s old stomping grounds while I was in Nashville.

Like so many of the places on Lower Broadway, Robert’s has live music from open to close, and a handful of people were enjoying afternoon beers and listening to Dave Cox finish up a lunchtime set when we walked in. The two of us took a seat at a high top, and Nicole started eyeing the shelves full of boots lining the nearby wall. Even though a little bit of daylight was coming in through the front window, there’s something about Robert’s that makes it feel like it's always almost last call inside those walls.

Went to Nashville on business the other week. While I mostly subsisted on hotel food, there are a couple of places I went that I’d like to tell y’all about. (Apparently it only takes a day or two in Tennessee for this former Southern boy’s accent to come back -- at least when I type, anyway.)

The first place is Pancake Pantry. My co-worker Nicole and I arrived in Nashville mid-morning with some time to spare before we could check into the hotel, so we decided to get some breakfast and found this restaurant on Urbanspoon. They’ve got 23 different kinds of pancakes. 23! Who’s tough stuff now, IHOP?
