Taco Bell Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco

Old Man Hidden Valley must be spinning in his grave.

Taco Bell announced on Monday that its Facebook fans could get the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco a day early. As we at Lunch Blog firmly believe in always living mas, we were happy to take them up on this exclusive offer. Besides, we didn’t want Taco Bell’s feelings to get hurt if none of its other 9,875,766 fans showed up.

The Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Taco ($1.29) is a beef taco topped with lettuce and cheddar cheese in a crunchy shell made from Cool Ranch Doritos. It’s also available as a Taco Supreme that adds on sour cream and tomatoes. However, we were skeptical of mixing powdered ranch creaminess with actual sour cream creaminess, so we stuck with the regular version.

So how is it? Not too bad. The shell is dotted with visible specks of red and green, and there’s a welcome blast of zestiness when you bite in. Whereas the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos Taco just piles on another layer of cheesy flavor, this adds a new dimension of taste to the taco experience. But be warned, the ranch lingers long after your taco is gone.

From a practical standpoint, we’re in awe of the fact that as opposed to actual Doritos, the Cool Ranch shell leaves little to zero residue on your fingers. The number of food scientist man-hours it took to come up with this breakthrough must be staggering. And while that’s crazy to think about, the taco itself isn’t particularly “locos.”

You know what would be locos? A Chili Cheese Fritos Chili Cheese Burrito. Your move, Taco Bell.

  1. I'm not sure if they offered them in KC, but they used to sell the Chili Cheese Fritos Burrito in Tulsa. I had MANY while they were available. They've been removed from the menu here for about a year now.

  2. I'd love to try one! We've had standard Frito Burritos, Flamin' Hot Frito Burritos and Volcano Burritos with "queso strips," but never a Chili Cheese Fritos Chili Cheese Burrito that I know of. We're missing out!

  3. I'm glad Taco Bell released the Nacho Cheese first. While delicious, the Cool Ranch taco is far superior.
